Perhaps the potential loss of Rielly in free agency would be easier to digest if Sandin blossoms into a full-time performer. That’s the other question mark — can Sandin properly take that next step?
Dubas wasn’t able to fulfill his off-season desire to add some physicality that departed when Bogosian signed with the Lightning. Instead, Biega and Dahlstrom were signed to one-year, two-way contracts.
So was Menell, who could be a depth-chart dark horse. After playing in five games for the Minnesota Wild two seasons ago, Menell last year had 38 points in 47 games for Dinamo Minsk of the KHL, finishing second among league defencemen.
Biega has an NHL resume that includes 241 games, and he would be in the conversation with Timothy Liljegren to be the next man up if a top-six skater gets hurt. Dahlstrom, who has played in 64 NHL games, also should be part of that next-tier group.
As for Liljegren, we can’t imagine he has much patience for settling for a seventh spot and/or another season with the Toronto Marlies. It’s up to the Leafs’ 2017 first-round pick to make Keefe’s decision on him difficult.
